Geschichten vom Kübelkind

Zum «Allianz Tag des Kinos» sind am So, 1.9. im Saal sämtliche Geschichten vom Kübelkind in zwei Tranchen zu sehen (15.00 Uhr und 18.15 Uhr, Eintritt je CHF 5.00) und parallel dazu in der Lounge ein Programm nach Wahl des Publikums.
Edgar Reitz wird persönlich anwesend sein und mehr zu Genese und Hintergründen des Kübelkinds erzählen. English text below

1962 erklärte eine neue deutsche Filmergeneration im Oberhausener Manifest «Opas Kino» für tot. Bis Ende der 60er-Jahre war aber der Sturm und Drang der Jungen erlahmt. Aus Trotz tat sich Edgar Reitz, Mitunterzeichner des Manifests, mit seiner Filmschülerin Ula Stöckl zusammen und drehte etwas, das jegliche cineastische Konvention formal wie inhaltlich gegen den Strich bürstete: eine Serie von 22 «Kino-Miniaturen» unterschiedlicher Länge über eine Figur, die ihrerseits provoziert. Geplant waren 64 Episoden, aber: «Irgendwann war einfach das Geld alle.» (Reitz)
Das «Kübelkind», eine Frau gewordene weggeworfene Nachgeburt, erlebt in jeder Geschichte Komisches, Abstruses, Erotisches, Tragisches und Tödliches und spielt dabei sämtliche Genres durch. Gedreht wurde im Stil der Nouvelle Vague, spontan und mit kleinster Equipe, auf 16 mm. Zeitgenossinnen und Berufskollegen wie Alf Brustellin, Bernhard Sinkel oder Werner Herzog gönnten sich Gastauftritte.
Ebenso freigeistig wie feministisch, fand das Kübelkind in Gestalt der Mimin Kristine de Loup auch ganz eigene Wege zum Publikum: Es geisterte zum einen, wie so manche Produktion des Neuen deutschen Films, als Betthupferl im Spätabendprogramm des WDR durch den Äther; zum andern aber sahen Reitz und Stöckl ihre anarchische Produktion primär für ein «Kneipenkino» vor, in dem die Gäste das Programm der Kurzfilme per «Speisekarte» spontan zusammenstellen konnten – Kino on Demand im vordigitalen Zeitalter.

In 1962, a new generation of German filmmakers in the published the «Oberhausen manifesto», declaring the death of «Grandpa's cinema». By the end of the 60's, however, the impetus of the youngsters had slackened. Edgar Reitz, co-signatory of the Manifesto, would not take this lying down and teamed up with his film student Ula Stöckl to shoot something that would go against the grain of all cinematic conventions, in terms of form as well as content: a series of 22 «cinematic miniatures» of various lengths about a character who is herself provocative. They originally planned to make 64 episodes, but: «At some point, we simply ran out of money.» (Reitz)
The «Kübelkind» or «Dumpster Kid», a woman grown from a discarded afterbirth, has comical, bizarre, erotic, tragic and fatal adventures in every story and goes through every film genre. The films were shot Nouvelle-Vague style, spontaneously and with a tiny crew, on 16 mm. Contemporaries and fellow filmmakers like Alf Brustellin, Bernhard Sinkel or Werner Herzog enjoyed cameo appearances.
The Dumpster Kid, as played by Kristine de Loup, was as polymorphously perverse as she was liberated, and chose very unorthodox ways to find her audience: On the one hand, like so many other New German Cinema productions, she haunted the airwaves as a late-night oddity on the German public broadcaster WDR; on the other, however, Reitz and Stöckl conceived their anarchic production primarily for a «pub cinema», where patrons could spontaneously put together a programme of the short films of their choice by means of a «menu» – cinema on demand in the pre-digital age.
On the 1st of September, the «Tag des Kinos», all of the Dumpster Kid Stories will screen (with Englisgh subtitles) in Filmpodium's auditorium in two batches, and at the same time, an à-la-carte programme selected by the audience will play in the lounge.
Edgar Reitz will be present and tell us more about the genesis and background of the Dumpster Kid.
