Mary Louise Brooks, 1906 in Kansas geboren, wuchs mit einer kulturell und feministisch engagierten, erzieherisch aber weniger begabten Mutter auf. Mit neun Jahren von einem Nachbarn missbraucht, was ihr Verhältnis zu Sex und Männern prägte, machte Louise bald als Tanztalent von sich reden. Als 15-Jährige zog sie mit einer Anstandsdame nach New York und trat der avantgardistischen Denishawn Company bei. Über die Revue Ziegfeld Follies kam sie 1925 zum Film; 1938 liess sie das Kino hinter sich und versuchte sich neu zu erfinden. Mary Louise Brooks, born in Kansas in 1906, grew up with a mother who was a sophisticated lover of the arts and a feminist, whose parenting skills, however, were less than impressive. Abused by a neighbor at the age of nine, which had a lasting influence on her attitude to sex and men, Louise soon made a name for herself as a gifted dancer. At the age of 15, she moved to New York with a chaperone and joined the avant-garde Denishawn Company. In 1925, she got into film by way of the Ziegfeld Follies; by 1938 she left cinema behind and tried to reinvent herself. Hugh Munro Neely's documentary traces Brooks' unique life.
