Hell in the Pacific
John Boorman (USA 1968)

(pm)

Towards the end of the Second World War, an American and a Japanese soldier are each stranded on the same uninhabited island. As adversaries from two warring parties, they continue to fight each other despite their unfortunate situation. Eventually, it dawns on them that they can only survive and escape from the island if they join forces.
John Boorman conceived the film as a quasi-silent film, and what little dialogue there is remains unimportant, as the two protagonists do not understand each other's language. A Robinsonade in the form of a chamber drama, sustained entirely by the two great actors and the island setting. (pm)
